Improv comedy is a tool that can mobilize individuals toward positive social change in a community. Laughing Matter does so thru service at hospitals, shelters, senior homes, and other therapeutic sites in the greater-Boston community.
I performed with Off-Off Campus, the University of Chicago's improv comedy group, for three years. Most notably, Off-Off Campus performed at the North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival and Chicago's 50th Anniversary of Improv Theater Celebration.
During a summer in Ghana, I worked with the Young & Wise Center to promote sexual and reproductive health rights and to establish an improv comedy group for community youth. I've also worked as an ESL tutor and hospital aide over the past few years.
Improv presents an opportunity to explore humorous situations in a group context that facilitates creative thinking. Improv teaches one to think on their feet, work with others, and deal with the unexpected, skills relevant to daily life.
Absolutely. Where else would I be?
Yes. Off-Off Campus required a two-round audition followed by a final selection. I am, of course, very glad I went through the experience.
